We believe that the best kind of sisterhood is planted in outreach — that Tri Delta is merely a Launchpad for the change we can each make at Carolina (and beyond!).
Tri Delta’s national philanthropy is St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. The Alpha Sigma Chapter of Tri Delta remains steadfastly devoted to raising money for St. Jude, in the hope that childhood cancer will one day be eradicated.
In 2007, our Chapter began participating in the Sincerely Yours letter-writing campaign. From our seven years of participating in Sincerely Yours, the Alpha Sigma chapter has raised more than $60,000 for St. Jude.
Pancake Dinner is another signature event we hold in February each year to support our sisters on the Tri Delta Dance Marathon Team. The UNC Dance Marathon is an event where students dance and stand for 24 hours to raise money for UNC Hospitals. You'll always see a line out the door for Pancake Dinner, where members of Tri Delta serve up drool-inducing BFD (breakfast-for-dinner) from our very own kitchen. From basketball players to UNC professors, we're never short on attendance (or pancakes)!
Every January, a crew of Alpha Sigmas will make the journey to the magic factory itself in Memphis, TN (St. Jude headquarters)! It’s an intensely coveted trip within our chapter — yes, even better than Disneyland.
Beyond St. Jude, we have dived full-force into numerous other causes on campus. “Go-Plates,” for example, has become an everyday ritual at Tri Delta, where, thanks to the student-run program, you will never see a leftover plate of scrumptious sorority grub go to waste! We’ve got girls packing up dinners every night to deliver to Chapel Hill’s homeless population. Harambee On the Hill, Timmy Global Health, and the Student Environmental Action Coalition are just another slice of Tri Delt’s philanthropic resume.
These activities accompany the many philanthropic endeavors which individual Tri Deltas take part in, from homeless outreach to coaching youth soccer to volunteering at UNC Hospitals.
Frats at Bat might just be our most exhilarating philanthropy event — bringing together nearly every fraternity on campus to compete in an epic softball tournament to benefit St. Jude. With 18 teams (coached by Tri Deltas, of course) vying for the championship, the intensely competitive event is always a blast for spectators and players alike. Fun, food, and competition — all in the spirit of a wonderful cause! Each year, Frats at Bat never ceases to reel in thousands of dollars for St. Jude. We can't wait for our next tournament in Spring 2020!
The winning team, Chi Phi, poses with their Tri Delta coaches after defeating fellow fraternities from all across campus.
Almost every philanthropic event we host is aimed to draw in not just the UNC greek system, but the Chapel Hill community at large. Find us spinning in the pit for Bike to Uganda, dancing till we can’t stand at UNC’s Dance Marathon or laying down the law on UNC’s elite Honor Court.
In the upcoming year, we hope to further increase our participation with both local and national charities, understanding that to whom much has been given, much will be expected.
